about

MIDNIGHT IN HAVANA
LOUIS VAUSE

‘Beneath his hands come echoes of Dr John, Professor Longhair,
Fats Waller and James Booker. But there is something else too: a
rolling, swampy lilt that is all his own’
The Observer

Louis Vause’s third album, Midnight in Havana, adds further to the brew, and somehow incorporates elements as diverse as Ruben Gonzales, Ramsey Lewis, Manuel De Falla, George Gershwin - even Eric Satie. Yet the unique ‘Vause’ sound remains undiminished.
Initial rehearsals took place at the same time as Vause, drummer, Graham Fox, and Bassist,
Gareth Huw Davies were rehearsing with Graham Coxon’s Power Acoustic Ensemble, which toured to critical acclaim in late 2009, culminating in a sell-out show at The Barbican in London. Augmented by a horn section, string section, acoustic and electric guitars and percussion, recordings took place at producer, Mike Pelanconi’s (aka Prince Fatty) studio, The Ironworks, in Brighton between October and December 2010.
Orchestrated by Vause, the various combinations of musicians on each track were designed to complement the strengths of each composition so the textures on the album are a constant surprise; from piano solo (Piano Noir) through piano, bass, drums and percussion (Bucaneros at O’Reillys), to an 11 piece small orchestra on the epic that is the title track.
Intensely personal, evocative and ultimately exhilarating this is some piece of work confirming the immortal Charlie Parker’s dictum that:

‘Music is your own experience, your thoughts, your wisdom. If
you don’t live it, it won’t come out of your horn.’
